But before we could go – after receiving numerous calls from the mailroom there – we had to stop by (again) and pick up more cards, letters and boxes that had come in while we’d been at the hotel.

Introduction

Before we could finally begin the journey home, there was one more unexpected stop to make. During our stay at the hotel, the hospital mailroom had been calling again and again, letting us know that even more deliveries had arrived. It seemed that every day brought another reminder of just how many people had been following our story, praying for our family, and searching for some small way to encourage us. So, before heading north, we drove back to the hospital one last time, expecting to collect a few envelopes but discovering something far greater. The mailroom shelves were once again overflowing with cards, handwritten letters, care packages, and carefully wrapped boxes from people we had never met. Some had traveled only a few miles, while others had crossed states or even countries before reaching us. Every package represented someone who had taken time out of their own busy life to think about a little girl they only knew through a story.

As we loaded everything into the car, we couldn’t help but smile in amazement. There were colorful drawings made by children, heartfelt notes from grandparents, knitted blankets stitched with incredible care, tiny stuffed animals meant to keep Indy company, and gift boxes filled with thoughtful surprises. Many of the letters contained personal stories of families who had faced their own medical challenges. Others simply offered prayers, words of encouragement, or Bible verses that had given them strength during difficult seasons. Reading through even a handful of them left us emotional. These weren’t just gifts—they were reminders that compassion still thrives in places we often forget to look.

The hospital staff smiled as they watched us carry load after load to the car. They had become part of our journey too, celebrating every piece of good news alongside us. Several nurses laughed that we might need a bigger vehicle if the mail kept arriving at this pace. Their lighthearted jokes helped balance the emotions of the moment, reminding us that healing isn’t only found in medicine. Sometimes it comes through laughter, friendship, and the kindness shared between complete strangers.

We realized that each envelope held more than paper and ink. Every handwritten sentence represented precious minutes someone had willingly given. Every package reflected generosity without expecting anything in return. In a world where discouraging headlines often dominate our attention, these simple acts quietly proved that goodness continues to exist in abundance. People who had never met Indy believed she mattered. They celebrated every milestone alongside us and continued encouraging us long after the hardest days had begun to fade.

Eventually, the trunk was completely full, and a few boxes even found their way onto the back seat. Looking at the overflowing car, we felt overwhelmed—not by the amount of mail, but by the incredible love behind it. Before pulling away from the hospital for what we hoped would be the final time, we paused for a moment of gratitude. This building had witnessed fear, uncertainty, countless prayers, and ultimately hope. Now, as we left carrying far more than we had expected, we knew we weren’t just taking home cards and gifts. We were bringing home thousands of reminders that even in life’s darkest chapters, kindness has an extraordinary way of finding those who need it most, often arriving one letter, one package, and one heartfelt prayer at a time.
