Introduction

Those were only a handful of the places represented in the growing mountain of mail. Dozens more waited patiently to be discovered, each envelope reminding Indiana that kindness knows no distance. It amazed her to think that people from so many different backgrounds had taken time out of their busy lives to write encouraging words to a little girl they had never met. Some had included handwritten prayers, others colorful drawings, small gifts, family photos, or thoughtful keepsakes. Every package carried a piece of someone’s heart, carefully wrapped in paper and hope. As she spread a map across the table, Indiana delighted in finding each state one by one, tracing imaginary routes from those faraway places all the way to her home.
