Introduction

By the time I arrived at Dell Children’s Hospital, everything was already moving quickly. A team of doctors and nurses had gathered around Indy, working with incredible focus and urgency. They were preparing her for what needed to happen next while also taking the time to explain the situation to us as clearly as they could. In those moments, our hearts were filled with fear, but we were grateful that Indy was surrounded by people who knew exactly what they were doing.
The doctors explained that fluid had built up around Indy’s heart, creating pressure that was preventing her heart from beating the way it needed to. Hearing those words was terrifying. Just days earlier, we had been celebrating her progress and enjoying precious moments together at home. Now, we were suddenly back in a hospital room, facing another unexpected challenge.
The medical team told us that the fluid was constricting her heart’s ability to function properly, and they needed to act quickly. There was no time to wait and hope that things would improve on their own. The safest option was to take Indy back into surgery to drain the fluid and relieve the pressure around her heart.
As parents, moments like this are incredibly difficult. There is a unique kind of helplessness that comes from watching your child face something serious while knowing that the best thing you can do is trust the doctors, pray, and stay by their side. We wanted nothing more than to take away her pain and carry the burden for her, but instead, we stood there holding onto hope and believing that Indy was in the right hands.
The doctors and nurses spoke with compassion and confidence. Their calm presence gave us reassurance during a moment that felt overwhelming. They answered our questions, explained each step, and made sure we understood why surgery was necessary. Even though the situation was frightening, their dedication reminded us that Indy had an entire team fighting for her.
As they prepared to take her back into surgery, we were reminded once again how precious every moment is. The ordinary days we sometimes take for granted — watching her smile, hearing her laugh, seeing her make progress — are actually the greatest gifts. Life can change so quickly, and experiences like this make us hold even tighter to gratitude.
Walking back into the hospital was not what we expected after such an incredible week at home. We thought we were moving forward into a season of healing and joy, but instead, we found ourselves facing another mountain to climb. Still, we knew that Indy had already overcome so much, and we believed she would continue to fight.
In that moment, our only focus was getting Indy the care she needed. We placed our trust in the medical team, held onto faith, and waited for the outcome of the surgery. The road was not easy, but Indy’s strength and courage continued to inspire everyone around her.
This chapter was another reminder that even in the hardest moments, love, hope, and the kindness of others can carry a family through. Indy was not facing this battle alone. She was surrounded by skilled doctors, caring nurses, and a family who would stand beside her every step of the way.
