Introduction

For Alan Jackson’s eldest daughter, Mattie Jackson, what should have been one of the happiest chapters of her life became an unimaginable tragedy just weeks before her first wedding anniversary. Mattie has spoken openly about losing her first husband, Ben Selecman, only 11 months after they exchanged vows—a heartbreaking experience that changed the course of her life and forced her to confront grief at an age when she believed their future together was only beginning.

Mattie and Ben married in October 2017 after a love story filled with excitement, friendship, and dreams for the years ahead. But during Labor Day weekend in September 2018, while vacationing in Florida with family and friends, everything changed. Ben suffered a devastating head injury after slipping and falling on a boat dock. What initially appeared to be an accident that he might recover from quickly became a medical emergency. He spent 12 days in intensive care, enduring severe brain swelling and multiple surgeries before tragically passing away at just 28 years old. His death came only three weeks before the couple would have celebrated their first anniversary.

For Mattie, the shock was almost impossible to comprehend. They were still newlyweds, still building their life together and imagining everything that was supposed to come next. She later described Ben as someone with an enormous personality—joyful, energetic, and able to make friends wherever he went. Losing him meant not only saying goodbye to the man she loved, but also grieving the future they had expected to share.

Rather than hiding the painful reality of widowhood, Mattie eventually chose to share her journey publicly. Her 2021 book, Lemons on Friday: Trusting God Through My Greatest Heartbreak, explores the early days of her grief, the difficult questions that followed Ben’s death, and her attempt to rediscover hope and purpose after experiencing such profound loss. Alan Jackson and his wife, Denise, contributed the foreword, sharing their own perspective as parents watching their daughter endure something they could not fix for her.

Mattie’s grief also became the inspiration for an especially personal collaboration with her famous father. She wrote lyrics reflecting her emotions and brought them to Alan, asking him to create the music. Together they created “Racing the Dark,” marking the first time father and daughter had written a song together. Alan later expressed admiration for the courage with which Mattie handled her loss and transformed part of her experience into music.

Mattie’s story is heartbreaking because it reminds us how quickly life can change. One moment can separate the future we imagined from a reality we never expected to face. Yet her journey has also become a story about continuing to live while still honoring someone who mattered deeply.

Ben will always remain part of Mattie’s story. And by speaking about the love they shared, the devastating goodbye, and the long road that followed, she has shown that moving forward does not require forgetting the person who came before. Sometimes healing simply means learning how to carry both love and loss into the next chapter.
